For God so loved -- Porque tanto amó Dios

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

It's kind of hard to say anything new or fresh about what for most people is the first Bible verse they ever learned. So instead of trynig to be innovative or profound, I just want to break this verse down and look at each phrase.

For God so loved the world
God isn't some angry old man up in the sky waiting to throw lightning bolts at us when we mess up.

that he gave
True love gives. You can give without loving (out of a sense of obligation or guilt), but you can't love without giving. He's a loving God.

his one and only Son
God gave the most precious gift he had to give, his own Son.

that whoever believes in him
Anybody -- rich or poor, young or old, slave or free, black or white, Asian or Hispanic, illiterate or with more degrees than a thermometer -- anybody who believes in him (not just intellectual assent, but entrusting your life to him) can be part of this.

shall not perish
In Romans 6:23 the Bible says that the wages of sin is death. When we put our trust in Jesus Christ and the sacrifice he made on the cross, we no longer have to suffer that separation from God.

but have eternal life
The gift of God is eternal life. Not just life after death and going to heaven, though that's part of it. But real life, starting the moment we place our faith in him. God places his eternal Holy Spirit in us, so we have living in us the eternal One, the Alpha and the Omega. We become truly human, the way we were designed to be in the Garden of Eden.

Juan 3:16
